Manawatu Tram Trust

Manawatu Tram Trust is founded on the principle of service to the community. The Trust's projects will help the community enjoy:

Value proposition

No carbon dioxide emissions from public transport

Diesel powered public transport vehicles emit carbon dioxide in copious quantities. Increasing the frequency and extending routes of public transport is an essential first step in changing the transportation paradigm. But increasing the frequency of diesel vehicles will add to pollution.

Sustainability

Transportation is central to the fabric of lifestyles and economic activity. Fossil fuel based transport models are not sustainable through this century, let alone this millennium. We will simply run out of oil.

Energy self sufficiency

Dependency on fossil fuel energy for public transport limits our community in times of political disruption of the oil supply chain.

Vehicle to grid (V2G)

Every one of our iconic Trams would be capable of providing reserve power to our electricity grid. V2G is a very important capability with electric vehicles which has far reaching benefits for our community.

Community benefit

  • Better air quality = better public health
  • Progressively emission free public transport.
  • Increase frequency & introduce new routes without increasing pollution

  • Using locally generated electricity for local transport needs.
  • Electricity - the energy model for this millennium.
  • locally produced energy powers local transport.
  • Mitigation of risk associated with supply chain disruption.

  • Manawatu tram batteries can help bridge gap between power generation and load at critical times.
  • Very fast response for short times, and can back up wind generation.

The Manawatu iconic tram represents a nostalgia for the past and a commitment to create a better future through state of the art technologies.
